....discussed some pros and cons of going ****table for all software
installations.
Two soul-mates, I think, but they were right ... OT, and not really
a matter for a.c.f.
Sooo .. I will continue comment in a.c.f.discussion, if anybody is
interested.

===================================================================
Not a topic for a.c.f. obviously, because a LOT of software to be made
****table is not freeware, including some mentioned in the original
posts.
But, as an exercise in ****tability I have rendered literally hundreds of
various software installations into single executable files, and many of
those were indeed freeware.
Many freewares come completely, or essentially, ****table in the first
place. They may be single executables, or they may have adjunct fileage
in the installation folder. They may or may not require reference to
system files. I love installations that are self-contained in one
folder.
The major problem with making ****tables is, they can be HUGE. That
necessitates expansion in order to execute. If in memory, then you best
have a BIG set of chips. If expanded onto the drive somewhere [usually
in out of the way places], then you will experience slow-down in both
execution and in operation while the drive seeks the fileage needed.
And, many times, depending upon how ****tables were made, a lot of
residual fileage may be left over to take up minor space on the host
drive. Some ****tables will also insist upon making registry entries for
no other reason than to say .. I've been here, meaning the author of the
software wanting due recognition.
Google around for helpmeets such as FilePacker, MultiPacker, nBinder, or
ThinStal to aid in packing up these single-file self-executable
programs. Your antivirus programs may groan about them, since these
things are also used by hackers, spammers, trojans, and virus mongers
around the world in deliberate attempts to ruin your computer. Most of
these idiots are juvenile techno-jocks with nothing to do, but some are
also software writers angry at the world over their hard works being
high-jacked, and thus they will set deliberate traps in popular places
visited by leechers, notably RapidShare, MegaUpload, etc.
Bottom Line: ****tablize only freeware, or those you legitimately have a
right to use.
