For the same reason it won't automatically install the wifi and NVidia
video drivers, because they're proprietary and Linux wants you to run
all Open Source software. But ultimately, it runs into the same
problem that Vista runs into, a lack of drivers. I suppose that in
another few years, Open Source will have advanced enough that you can
just stick a Linux Live CD and its generic drivers will run all your
hardware but it's not there yet -- at least not for notebook
computers.
